What do you need to know before applying to volunteer? Below are answers to frequently asked questions related to volunteering at Silesia Marathon
The Silesia Marathon 2024 will take place on October 6th, 2024
From October 2nd, we will begin working at the race office, the place where all participants of the marathon, ultramarathon, and half-marathon will collect their race packeges.
We are planning that the ultramarathon starts at 7:30 AM, the marathon at 8:05 AM, and the half-marathon at 9:40 AM. However, volunteers will begin their work much earlier on that day – we plan to have a meeting at 6:00 AM. This early start time ensures that everyone will be at their stations on time, allowing them to prepare for their tasks. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to meet with coordinators and other volunteers performing similar tasks, receive their shirts, and food packages beforehand.
The earliest to start their work will be the baggage storage team – they will welcome the first athletes as early as 6:30 AM.
From March 1st until the end of October 2023, we invite everyone who would like to get involved in organizational activities, which are ongoing for most of the year. The Silesia Pro Active Foundation has its office at the Silesian Stadium.
Everyone involved in the preparation and management of the marathon is invited to participate in training sessions regarding sports volunteering and preparation for specific roles. Through these sessions, you will gain knowledge and information that you can use not only during the Silesia Marathon but also at other running or sports events. We plan to conduct the training sessions in September 2024. They will take place in the afternoon (possibly on weekends). The exception is school groups – for them, we can organize meetings at the school premises, upon prior agreement, also in the morning hours. Attendance at the training sessions is mandatory – during these sessions, we will provide all the information that will help you feel safe and comfortable in your role as a volunteer.
Yes, we engage individuals who have not yet reached the age of 18 as volunteers for the Silesia Marathon 2023. However, we kindly request a written consent for participation in volunteering, signed by parents/legal guardians. You can request a sample of this consent from our volunteer coordinators (email contact): biuro@slaskie-wolontariat.org.pl).
According to the current legal definition of volunteering, it is unpaid, voluntary, conscious, and altruistic activity. Therefore, we do not plan to provide financial compensation for volunteer work during the Silesia Marathon 2023. For all volunteers, we will prepare commemorative packages, including shirts and certificates
Yes, we will prepare a meal for all volunteers – both during office activities and on the day of the marathon itself. Most likely, it will be a package consisting of a sandwich, fruit, water, and sweets
Unfortunately, we are unable to reimburse travel expenses for each individual to Katowice. However, we will certainly provide transportation to the place of tasks (e.g., to areas distant from the city center of Katowice, to Mysłowice, or to Siemianowice).
The only exception is the reimbursement of travel expenses for organized groups. For instance, if you are a school group from outside Katowice and you plan to participate in the marathon with a minimum of 30 people, you can request reimbursement for travel costs. To do so, please contact the coordinator, preferably via email at: biuro@slaskie-wolontariat.org.pl.
