From the very beginning, the Silesia Marathon has been a race that attracted runners not only from the Silesian Voivodeship or Poland but also from many other countries. Foreign athletes have participated in our races since the first edition. The Silesia Marathon has seen participants from countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Netherlands, Sweden, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Serbia, Armenia, Finland, France, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria, Denmark, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Israel, and even distant ones like Australia, the United States, Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Japan, Kenya, the Central African Republic, and Mexico.

Foreigners were the first in history to stand on the highest step of the Silesia Marathon podium. The winner of the first edition of the race in the men’s category was Ukrainian Olexiy Medentsov, who finished with a time of 02:25:48. In the women’s category, the fastest was Belarusian Volha Yudziankova, who finished with a time of 2:55:38.

In 2010, the race course was limited to one city, and the event was held exclusively on the streets of Katowice. The event attracted 1,074 participants. The second edition of the Silesia Marathon was won by Belarusians: Yury Kaptserau (2:35:01) and Volha Kaminskaya (2:51:40).

A Pole first stood on the highest step of the podium during the third edition of the race, which took place on May 3, 2011. Przemysław Rojewski from Luzino in the Pomeranian Voivodeship achieved a time of 2:26:37. Among the women, the winner was Nataliya Hryhorieva from Belarus, who finished with a time of 2:59:48.

In 2011, the marathon was successfully organized on a route through three cities, from Chorzów through Siemianowice Śląskie to Katowice. The participants of the third edition of the race faced a challenging task. The struggle with the marathon distance, which is a significant challenge in itself, was made even harder by the weather. All those who participated that day will never forget the weather breakdown they encountered—torrential rain and temperatures close to 0°C! This fact might not have been so surprising if it weren’t for the fact that the event took place in May.

During the fourth edition of the race, exactly one year later on May 3, 2012, the capricious weather surprised the runners again. This time, however, it was in a completely different way, with an African heatwave! The scorching heat made the task even more difficult than the previous year’s penetrating cold. The first to cross the finish line in their categories were Grzegorz Czyż from Bogumiłowice in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship (2:42:04) and Ewa Kalarus from Myszków in the Silesian Voivodeship (03:11:44). In such heat, achieving satisfying results was difficult. The times of the leading athletes significantly differed from their personal bests. The men’s category winner had previously participated in the Silesia Marathon three times, each time finishing with a better result than the one that ultimately led him to the highest place on the podium!

– I finally made it. It was a tough marathon with a lot of uphill sections. At the beginning, I wasn’t in the lead, but once I took the lead, I didn’t give it up – said the winner, Grzegorz Czyż.

In 2013, the Silesia Marathon course was reversed. Instead of finishing at Spodek, the runners started there. The route led through the districts of Katowice, then through Siemianowice, and finally through Chorzów. The last 5 km ran through a section in Silesian Park. The finish line was located near the “Kapelusz” hall. The winners of the main race on May 12, 2013, were Jakub Glajcar from Wisła (2:35:35) and once again Ewa Kalarus (2:57:24).

– The Silesia Marathon was my second marathon. I prepared for this race for 5 months. I won’t hide that I was well-prepared and strongly believed I would win. That day was rainy and cold. To warm up, I set a fast pace from the start and took the lead, maintaining it until the end. I have fond memories of the cyclist leading the race, with whom I chatted about various topics for part of the course –  recalls the winner at the time, Jakub Glajcar.

In 2014, the event was organized for the first time on a now well-known date, the first Sunday of October. The race course ran through the streets of Katowice, Siemianowice Śląskie, and Mysłowice. The start and finish lines were located at the “Silesia City Center” shopping mall. The winners that day were Rafał Czarnecki from Bliżyn, who crossed the finish line with a time of 2:35:48, and Patrycja Włodarczyk from Jaworzno, who completed the race in 2:57:58.

In 2015, PKO Bank Polski became the title sponsor of the race. From that moment, the event was called the PKO Silesia Marathon for the next four years. On October 4, 2015, the first to cross the finish line were Ukrainian Taras Salo (2:33:09) and, for the second consecutive time, Patrycja Włodarczyk (2:54:36). The following year, at the finish line of the 8th Silesia Marathon, the winners were Kenyans Joel Maina Mwangi (2:24:51) and Betty Chepleting (2:52:12).

In 2017, the Silesia Marathon returned to its roots, starting from the gates of the legendary “Witches’ Cauldron.” This edition was also special because it was the first sporting event held at the newly renovated Silesian Stadium. This contributed to a record attendance, with over one hundred thousand people visiting the stadium on the day of the event! On that special day, the winners were Damian Pieterczyk (2:23:36) and, for the third time in the event’s history, Patrycja Włodarczyk (2:49:02).

On October 7, 2018, the 10th edition of the Silesia Marathon took place. This anniversary edition set a record for the number of participants. That year, over 8,000 runners participated in all the races held as part of the event. Among them, 41 people ran the marathon for the tenth time. The oldest participant running the marathon distance was 76-year-old Mr. Franciszek from Katowice. The first to cross the finish line in the men’s category was Andrzej Rogiewicz from Grudziądz (2:26:40), and in the women’s category, Patrycja Włodarczyk won for the fourth time (3:00:36).

– The Silesia Marathon is all about the atmosphere for me. This race is made by the people—not the elite, the professionals, but the ordinary runners, the amateurs. Many marathons are centered around the elite. Amateurs are the backdrop, while the elite are brought in from everywhere, and organizers compete to invite the biggest stars. I don’t see myself as a star of the Silesia Marathon, and I don’t come here to win. Winning is just the cherry on top for me. Silesia is about the people, and I run here to meet them. For me, it’s a homely marathon, and as a Silesian, I strongly identify with it – says Patrycja Włodarczyk, four-time winner of our race.

Since 2019, the main partner of the Silesia Marathon has been the Silesian Voivodeship. Together with the Voivodeship, from 2019 to 2021, we organized the Silesian Uprisings Running Triad—a series of events included in the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Silesian Uprisings. The aim was to honor the memory of the heroes of the Silesian national liberation movements through sport.

Depending on the number of kilometers completed over 2 or 3 years, participants received one of three awards:

Gold trophy – for completing at least 100 km

Silver trophy – for completing at least 50 km

Bronze trophy – for completing at least 25 km

The 12th edition of the race, held in the exceptionally challenging, pandemic year of 2020, will undoubtedly go down in history. Thanks to our passion for running and years of experience, we managed to organize a safe event in nearly unchanged form. Together with you, we proved that the running community has tremendous power, and no force can stop it. During this special event, the first to triumph in their categories at the finish line were Andrzej Rogiewicz (2:27:15) and Katarzyna Golba (2:52:06).

The Silesia Marathon 2021, held on October 3rd, was a particularly special event. The 13th edition turned out to be exceptionally fortunate for us and demonstrated that the community of runners we have gathered over the years can endure even the toughest times, returning with doubled strength to break our previous attendance record. What’s more, the winner of the 13th Silesia Marathon, Andrzej Rogiewicz, crossed the finish line with a time of 02:19:07, thus breaking the previous course record! Among the women, the fastest was Iryna Masnyk from Ukraine, finishing with a time of 2:59:00.

– I was very happy that I managed to complete such a long distance on a not too easy route. When I ran into the stadium, I didn’t feel tired at all. It was something amazing and will always stay in my memory. Thank you very much to the organizers for such a great running event, and I hope to start again in the Silesia Marathon.” – said Iryna.

The 14th edition of the Silesia Marathon took place on October 2, 2022. Andrzej Rogiewicz won the men’s category for the fourth time with a time of 2:20:27. Among women, the top finisher was Anna Bodnar, who crossed the finish line in 2:57:21.

Andrzej Rogiewicz, four-time winner of the Silesia Marathon, said: I’ve run at the National Stadium, I’ve run in the Kraków Marathon – that’s where I made my debut 7 years ago. Nowhere else is there an atmosphere like at the Silesia Marathon. The atmosphere here is incredible.

– Silesia Marathon 2022 will remain etched in my memory forever. It was my third marathon in life and the first one I finished with a victory, achieving a satisfying result for me. When I ran my first marathon in 2021 (also the Silesia Marathon) and fell in love with this distance, I thought to myself: Someday I will win this. And so it happened, sooner than I expected.

The level of emotion and intensity during the finish at the stadium is indescribable. It’s an experience that will stay in my mind for the rest of my life. Despite still battling with an injury that had been bothering me for some time before the Silesia Marathon 2022, I regret nothing, but I hope to finally overcome it and give my 100% in the 2023 edition. Silesia Marathon is like a beautiful dream, yet not a dream. It’s like a fairy tale, yet not a fairy tale, but reality. It’s already the past, yet I hope it’s also the future. Znani ludzie na trasie Silesia Marathon

Na trasie naszych biegów nie zabrakło też osób dobrze nam wszystkim znanych ze świata mediów. Podczas naszych zawodów niejednokrotnie gościliśmy aktorów, dziennikarzy, piosenkarzy, polityków i inne znane osobistości. Poniżej prezentujemy kilka znanych twarzy, które mogliście mijać w czasie swoich biegowych zmagań.

Kuba Wesołowski – aktor teatralny i filmowy znany najszerszej publiczności z serialu “Na Wspólnej”. Wziął udział w pierwszej edycji Silesia Marathon w 2009 roku. Królewski dystans pokonał wówczas z czasem 03:43:19. Po latach powrócił na trasę śląskiego biegu. Można powiedzieć, że przez 12 lat jego forma utrzymywała się na stałym poziomie, bo w roku 2021 wbiegł na metę z niewiele słabszym czasem – 03:46:13.

– Biegi poza Warszawą to dla mnie zawsze pewien rodzaj wyzwania. Trzeba zmierzyć się z logistyką, a do tego nie ma tego wsparcia w postaci najbliższych ci osób. W przypadku ostatniego Silesia Marathon było trochę inaczej. Biegliśmy tutaj dla zabawy i przyjemności – wszystko po to, by popularyzować wydarzenie. Jeżeli nie masz pręgierza w postaci czasu, to każdy bieg staje się przyjemny. W zeszłym roku nie miałem niestety czasu na wymagające treningi, więc przebiegnięcie maratonu samo w sobie było fajnym przeżyciem. Do 30 kilometra był mega ubaw, dopiero później zrobiło się mniej przyjemnie. W końcu we znaki dało się zmęczenie. Nie ma to jednak porównania z moim pierwszym występem na Silesia Marathon. Wówczas towarzyszył nam ogromny upał i na 41 kilometrze byłem na skraju wytrzymałości. Okupiłem to strasznym bólem i zmęczeniem. Tym razem było bardzo przyjemnie, kibicowało nam mnóstwo ludzi, z twarzy nie schodził uśmiech. Impreza rozrasta się w niesamowity sposób. Sama trasa jest absolutnie malownicza. Byłem w szoku, gdy zobaczyłem otaczającą nas zieleń i parki. W porównaniu do Warszawy, w której biegam na co dzień, miejsc do biegania jest zdecydowanie więcej. Śląsk kojarzymy zazwyczaj jako przestrzeń silnie zurbanizowaną, a znakomita większość biegu to parki czy urokliwe miejsca, jak Nikiszowiec. Taki bieg zapada w pamięć i na pewno nie ma mowy, by się podczas niego nudzić – wspomina aktor.

Tadeusz Sławek – poeta, tłumacz, eseista, literaturoznawca, profesor nauk humanistycznych, samorządowiec. Rektor Uniwersytetu Śląskiego w latach 1996–2002. Profesor Sławek brał udział w pierwszej edycji Silesia Marathon. Na metę sportowych zmagań przybiegł z czasem 04:35:31. Tadeusz Sławek jest doskonałym przykładem tego, że rozwój intelektualny jest silnie związany z rozwojem fizycznym.

 

 

Borys Budka – polityk, prawnik, nauczyciel akademicki, samorządowiec, radca prawny, doktor nauk ekonomicznych. Brał udział w Silesia Marathon w roku 2009. Może pochwalić się świetnym rezultatem wynoszącym 02:39:03.

Roman Polko – generał dywizji Wojska Polskiego, oficer dyplomowany wojsk powietrznodesantowych i sił specjalnych, doktor nauk wojskowych w specjalności kierowanie organizacją. W roku 2010 ukończył Silesia Marathon z czasem 04:07:11.

 

 

Dziennikarze Anita Werner i Michał Kołodziejczyk wzięli udział w Silesia Półmaratonie w roku 2021. Był to dla nich trzeci półmaraton w życiu. Para dziennikarzy trasę pokonała razem, wbiegając na metę z czasem 02:11:30.

 

 

Artur Rojek – Dyrektor Artystyczny OFF Festival, muzyk, wokalista. Wziął udział w 10. edycji Silesia Marathon w ramach
Otwartych Mistrzostw Ludzi Kultury Województwa Śląskiego.

– Bardzo lubię biegać. Bieganie mnie relaksuje, dodaje energii i jest momentem, kiedy łapię kontakt ze sobą. Nie biegam dla medali, ale dla uczucia satysfakcji, które bieganie daje mi w trakcie i po. Pomysł na bieg dla ludzi kultury bardzo mi się podoba. Pamiętam, jak 15 lat temu moi koledzy z rock’n’rollowego podwórka pukali się w czoło, kiedy widzieli mnie o poranku w hotelu w stroju sportowym w porze, kiedy oni dopiero wracali. Dzisiaj biegają razem ze mną.

Silesia Marathon to ciągle rozwijający się bieg. We wszystkich edycjach naszych zawodów udział wzięły łącznie 48.622 osoby, które pokonały dystans 1.264.634 kilometrów! Te liczby już robią wrażenie, a to jeszcze nie koniec – dopiero się rozkręcamy!
